Michigan Wage Garnishment Calculator
Michigan sets no lower percentage than federal law, so the federal 25% / $217.50 limit applies — and a periodic garnishment now lasts until the judgment is paid.
Periodic garnishments under MCL 600.4012
- While a periodic garnishment is running, the creditor must send you and the employer a statement of the remaining balance at least every six months.§1
- Within 21 days after the judgment is paid in full the creditor must give the employer and you a release of garnishment.§1
- Garnishments are paid in the order received, but support income withholding and state tax levies come first regardless of order.§1
- Michigan’s minimum wage ($13.73, rising to $15.00 on January 1, 2027 per the DOL table) does not change the garnishment floor, which stays at 30 times the federal $7.25.§4
A Grand Rapids two-week check
Michigan follows the federal percentage, so a Grand Rapids worker with $1,950.00 gross every two weeks and $330.00 withheld loses $405.00 per check — and because a periodic garnishment now runs until the judgment is paid, that continues until the creditor files its release.
Where the Michigan limit comes from
A garnishment of periodic payments remains in effect until the balance of the judgment is satisfied.
